Here’s what you should know about this cannabis compound.

When the initial cannabis and hemp laws were written, it was as though THC and CBD were the only compounds. However, Delta-8 tetrahydrocannabinol is the latest of over 100 cannabinoids to start getting a lot of media attention. If you’ve heard of Delta-8 but don’t know what it is, this is the right place for you.

Here’s a breakdown of everything you need to know about Delta-8 to determine whether it’s the right product for you.

What Is Delta-8?

Delta-8 is a naturally occurring phytocannabinoid found exclusively in the cannabis plant. It is typically found in small traces and is somewhat similar in chemical structure to what we commonly refer to as THC. In actuality, THC is a subcategory that encompasses around half of the phytocannabinoids found in these plants.

The compound we refer to as THC is Delta-9 THC, and Delta-8 is closely related but with milder psychoactive effects. However, it does still provide a similar euphoric feeling but with a lower risk of paranoia, anxiety, and drowsiness. Let’s dive a little deeper into how Delta-8 relates to its more popular brethren.

How Does Delta-8 Compare to THC and CBD?

Some people colloquially refer to Delta-8 as “THC lite,” as it is closer in both chemical structure and effect to THC than CBD. However, it’s actually derived from the legal hemp plant, meaning that you don’t need to live in a state in which cannabis is recreationally nor medically legal to use it.

Delta-8 binds to your body’s CB1 receptors to increase certain protein reactions while inhibiting others. While it can make you “high,” it provides a different experience than Delta-9 THC. Everybody’s body will react to each cannabinoid differently, so this is by no means medical advice. However, Delta-8 reportedly boasts benefits for depression, anxiety, and other health issues that negatively impact emotion.

Beyond that, the lack of federal guidelines and research means you should take precautions with Delta-8. Start by microdosing with 5mg increments to find the right dosage for your body chemistry.

Will Delta-8 Show Up on a Drug Test?

Standard urinalysis for things such as employment or probation does not currently differentiate between cannabinoids. This means that Delta-8 could cause a false positive by detecting the incorrect chemical compound in your urine. Because of scattered state and federal laws, this could create problems you should be aware of if using Delta-8 prior to a scheduled test.

Also, be aware that using Delta-8 may cause similar impairment to Delta-9 and should not be used while driving. Be mindful of your surroundings, and make sure to only take as much as you need as a supplement.

Getting Started with Delta-8

Because it’s made with all-natural hemp, Delta-8 is widely available. However, not all manufacturers and distributors are the same. You should always deal with only the most reputable sources that use the cleanest ingredients. This will ensure you have the most positive experience and avoid any complications.
